Introduction
As this Archive makes clear, Joseph Sittler was not an unusually prolific writer. Much of his contribution was oral; thus, we are working to collect all the audio and video tapes of his speeches and sermons (see Archive Catalogue). But his written work is very important — from The Doctrine of the Word in 1948 to Essays on Nature and Grace in 1972. His more recent collections of shorter pieces, Grace Notes and Other Fragments and Gravity and Grace have made Sittler accessible to people in all walks of life; both, alas, are out of print. Sittler’s writings reflect the same enormous themes, such as the expanding scope of grace, that characterize him.

This bibliography was created by Peter Bakken, Ph.D., to whom we are indebted for permission to use it. It is very complete, organized by type of work and, within each type, Sittler’s writings are organized chronologically. The bibliography also includes works about Sittler, listed alphabetically by author. Ultimately, we plan to indicate in the bibliography which publications are actually available in the Sittler Archive at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.
